THE NEEDS

THE NEEDS of Sangam School include support to help those children who cannot even afford £2 per month for the school fees. The village of Indri and those in the area are very poor, relying mainly on farming.

In 2002 a generous donor bought the school a much-needed bus, which will enable children from other, equally needy, villages to attend.

The school has room for more pupils. The number that can be accepted is entirely dependant on the donated income.

About 5000 rupees per pupil per year (approximately £6 per month) would enable an extra child to attend the school. This figure is sufficient to pay all the additional costs of one pupil, including a contribution to the salary of the teacher and for good classroom facilities.

If the school is to expand to meet local needs better, and to accept older children, there is a need for teachers with higher qualifications. A donor, perhaps a company or a school, might sponsor a teacher by contributing £30 per month.

Currently funds are sought to build more classrooms so that older pupils may remain at the school. £13,000 would pay for three new classrooms and extension of the laboratory and library.

In Britain a small band of supporters are seeking to find additional sources of help. These include:

Eleanor Nesbitt, a long-time supporter of the Sangam School, having taught with Kamla Sawhney. Eleanor now works at the University of Warwick, and and is a member of Coventry Quaker Meeting. Information about her may be seen on the University web site;

and myself, Stephen Petter, retired, a Quaker (currently transferring membership from Westminster to Bristol) full details of whom can be obtained from his web site. Stephen worked as a volunteer teacher of English at Sangam School in December 2001, and says he was so inspired by the vision of the foundation, the school, its dedicated teachers, and its bright, eager and thoroughly delightful pupils that he resolved to help with fundraising and the maintenance of this web site!
