THE COSTS

Until recently the cost of running the school has been approximately 360,000 rupees per year (At £1 = 65 rupees, less than £6,000). Teachers are paid £20 to £30 per month; parents are asked to pay less than £2 per month per child. This is much more than the typical family can afford, and much less than the real cost. This amount is totally inadequate for recruiting and retaining teachers and for further development. Better salaries would mean that fully qualified teachers could be employed.

No government funds are sought as it is considered that this would compromise the nature and quality of the education provided.

All funds other than pupils' families' contributions are donated by well-wishers in India and in Britain.

Design by Sunita Khatana (class 8).
